Wrapped in coats, city lights and winter air: a couples photoshoot in Sydney CBD
Oh Sydney, our beautiful city of a hundred beaches, warm summer nights and turquoise waters. At least, these are the first images that come to my mind when I hear the name “Sydney”.
No one really thinks of Sydney as a perfect place for cold weather photographs. But come winter, and our beach paradise transforms into something completely different: moody, textured, a little European, wrapped in coats and scarves, walking past sandstone buildings, stopping for coffee at café corners, catching reflections in old windows and soft light under street lamps.
Maybe it is because my birthday suddenly became a winter one after I left the Northern Hemisphere, but I have developed a certain liking for Sydney in this particular weather. Though I still do not understand where the central heating is. Lol.
Winter is not the season to wait out. It is the season for city photographs.

The city gives your photos texture and atmosphere
All these arches, columns, staircases and old doorways — we pass them by every day, usually rushing somewhere, barely noticing them. But I urge you to stop, pause, look around. You might notice something beautiful. Something hidden in plain sight.
I walked past this QVB staircase every week in summer and it never really caught my eye. Then, two weeks ago, I was walking past it again and thought: “Actually, my couple would look stunning in there.”
The iron railings, the ornate columns, the stained glass, the shadows, the winter light — it all adds up beautifully. The city gives you layers. It gives you shape, texture, lines, reflections, corners, little pockets of romance. It gives the photographs a story before we even start.

Winter outfits look natural in the city
Styling a winter session in Sydney CBD is easy because the clothes already belong there.
Coats, knits, scarves, boots, jackets, trench coats — they all look intentional and stylish in the city. On a beach, winter styling can sometimes feel slightly off. In the CBD, it makes sense.
You can wear rich colours, deep shades, warm neutrals, chocolate, camel, cream, charcoal, burgundy, navy, even black. And yes, you can even wear black — my least recommended colour for most family sessions — because in the city it can look beautiful, dramatic and completely at home.
Your man can also survive this one. If he wants a hoodie, we can work with that. Though perhaps let’s swap it for a bomber, a coat or a nice jacket and call it a win.
A city photoshoot works even when the weather is imperfect
And what if it drizzles? Let’s face it: winter in Sydney is not always dry.
But in the city, rain does not have to ruin the session. There are roofs, arches, covered walkways, beautiful entrances, hotel fronts, cafés, arcades and sandstone corridors where we can hide from a few drops and keep going.
From QVB to The Rocks, there are so many photogenic covered spots. And sometimes rain actually adds to the mood. A little shine on the pavement, softer light, fewer crowds, coats pulled closer — it can make your couples photoshoot feel even more cinematic.
You can turn the session into a date
Have a tough guy who is not exactly thrilled about the idea of a “couples photoshoot”? I hear you.
So let’s not make it feel like one.
Think of it as a city walk. You explore a few beautiful corners of Sydney, I come along with the camera, you stop for a drink on the way, hug here, kiss there, laugh at how awkward it felt for the first five minutes, and then suddenly it is easy.
And afterwards? Dinner. Preferably somewhere he approves of, because we are strategic like that.
Boom. It is no longer “posing for photos”. It is a winter date, and you just happen to have someone there to photograph it properly instead of taking selfies or asking him to take one more photo of you.
Less stress for him. More beautiful images for you.
Is Sydney CBD good only for couples photography?
This post focuses on couples, but the same winter city atmosphere works beautifully for families too — especially if you want something different from the usual beach or park session.
Coats, laneways, sandstone buildings, cafés and covered walkways can make a family session feel cosy, cinematic and very Sydney. It can also be more fun for little explorers: stairs to climb, corners to discover, windows to look into, lights to follow, and maybe a hot chocolate afterwards.
So while the photographs here are from couples sessions, the idea is bigger than that. Winter in the city can be beautiful for couples, families, maternity sessions, solo portraits and anyone who wants photographs with a little more mood and texture.
If the beach does not feel right in winter, the city is waiting.
Wrap yourself in coats, choose your favourite corner of Sydney, and let’s turn a cold afternoon into a cinematic little date.
